The project pARameter – Promoting Augmented Reality In MAtheMatics Education To Enhance Student LeaRning – aims to support learners in the field of analytical geometry by the provision of augmented reality-supported learning environments. A central part of the project is the smartphone app geometAR.

The Idea

geometAR App

The new geometAR enables users to place objects from analytical geometry (such as planes, points, and lines) directly into their immediate surroundings using augmented reality. Instead of only projecting 3D mathematical objects onto a 2D screen, as is the case with DGS (dynamic geometry software), geometAR allows users to experience and explore the three-dimensionality of mathematical situations directly in their environment. The object can then be explored from multiple perspectives. A unique opportunity to make mathematical objects not only visible but also tangible in 3D space. geometAR also offers decisive advantages over other AR applications. The input of mathematical objects in the app uses exactly the same symbolic notation that students learn and get to know in class. For example, planes can be entered in parameter, cartesian or normal form.

pARameter project focuses on making the geometAR app OS-independent and enhancing its core functions to specifically support interactive math teaching with augmented reality. The upcoming version brings improved usability, access for Android users, and new tools designed to lower the entry barrier for both teachers and learners. Among the highlights are features for spatial geometry and collaborative elements that enable scene sharing. Separate user accounts for teachers and students will offer tailored experiences—encouraging both guided instruction and independent learning.

The Project

Work Packages

Through five coordinated work packages, the project delivers engaging, high-quality educational content tailored to enhance the geometAR app experience.

Project management

We will ensure effective and efficient management of budget and time, as well as quality and content assurance, by applying the most suitable tools and methods. This will include monitoring all activities, handling administrative tasks, coordinating efforts, managing budget implementation, and facilitating communication among all partners.

geometAR App

Building on the experience of using the currently available iOS beta version of geometAR app (malAR app) WP2 aims to make geometAR app OS-idependent accessible to all devices while enhancing its features to elevate mathematics teaching and learning through augmented reality. New features are intended to lower the threshold of participation both for teachers and learners.

AR task data base

The goal of this work package is to equip the geometAR app with expert-created in-app materials to provide easy accessible, high quality material while simultaneously lowering the participation threshold, especially when getting started with geometAR app but also beyond. By providing geometAR-sensitive tasks on spatial geometry for lower secondary education and analytical geometry for upper secondary education, combined with pre-created AR scenes for each task, we offer didactically well-founded examples.

Teaching & learning material

Dissemination

As part of the national teacher training courses, our goal is to equip as many teachers as possible with the knowledge and skills to effectively integrate geometAR into mathematics instruction. Additionally, we aim to foster internationalization and cross-border exchange among teachers within this WP. At an international teacher meeting teachers can connect with peers and experts in digital media for mathematics education, exchange ideas, and build up an international network.
